TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW

Synaptic Research conducts research in three major areas with the
goal of developing products based on this research:

1. Construction of designer ubiquitin ligases to selectively control
the ubiquitin system and thereby treat diseases, starting with the
development of a post-exposure therapeutic for botulism.

2. Methods to identify the presence of the botulinum toxin, using
reliable, low-cost indicators. Identification is important both for
food-borne toxins and as a defensive measure if botulism is used as
a bio-weapon.

3. Use of the botulinum toxin in medical or cosmetic applications.
The use of the toxin in such applications has become a major
commercial activity.

Other novel applications are also being researched.

The Botulinum Neurotoxin (BoNT) works on the
neuromuscular junction. This electron micrograph
shows a cross section of the neuromuscular
junction. T is the axon terminal, M is the muscle
fiber.
